Moissanite FAQ
Moissanite is a lab-grown gemstone known for its exceptional sparkle, durability, and value compared to diamonds.
In the late 90’s, scientists developed the innovative thermal growing process that creates silicon carbide crystals in a lab. These crystals are cut and faceted into moissanite gemstones and they rival any natural gemstone in fire and brilliance.
In terms of toughness, moissanite ranks second on the Mohs hardness scale just behind diamond in hardness and scratch resistance. Moissanite’s durability makes it an ideal gem for daily wear and ensures it will last a lifetime.
Moissanite brilliance refers to its sparkle! The chemical structure of moissanite allows it to slow down, bend, and redirect light better than any other gemstone. This incredible sparkle measures between 2.65 and 2.69 on the refractive index, making moissanite the world’s most brilliant gem.
Moissanite gems are known for their fire or dispersion, which is defined as a gemstone’s ability to split light to create a rainbow-like effect. Moissanite has more fire than any other gemstone - including diamond, ruby, sapphire, and emerald!
Moissanite and Lab-Grown Diamonds are not the same. Moissanite is a unique gemstone with its own chemical, physical and optical properties.
- Brilliance & Fire: Moissanite outshines diamonds in sparkle. Its refractive index ranges between 2.65 and 2.69 (versus diamond at 2.42), and its dispersion ("fire") is 0.104—far exceeding diamond.
- Hardness: With a Mohs hardness of approximately 9.25 to 9.5, moissanite is incredibly durable—second only to diamonds.
- Cost: Generally, moissanite costs just 10–20% of a comparable-quality diamond, making it a brilliant value option.
- Ethics: Being lab-created, moissanite avoids concerns tied to diamond mining and supports a more sustainable, conflict-free choice.
Absolutely. Thanks to its high hardness and toughness, moissanite stands up well to everyday wear—resistant to chips, scratches, and abrasions.
Moissanite grading uses a color grading scale that is based upon the GIA diamond color grading scale. There are three grades of moissanite available today: colorless (D-E-F range), near-colorless (G-H range) and with faint hues of color (J-K range).
Cleaning is easy:
- Use warm, soapy water with a soft brush, or a gentle jewelry cleaner.
- Avoid harsh household chemicals—mild cleaning solutions work best.
Nope! Moissanite maintains its brilliance and fire indefinitely, often covered by a limited lifetime warranty from reputable brands. It also resists color changes—even under extreme heat, any temporary color shifts revert once cooled
With specialized tools like a loupe, yes—you may see identifying marks or double refraction that distinguish it from diamonds . But to the naked eye, even jewelers might not spot a difference.
Yes, moissanite withstands heat much better than many gemstones. It retains its brilliance even after exposure to high temperatures or jeweler’s torches—often reverting to normal afterward
Not at all. Moissanite is a gemstone in its own right, not a diamond imitation. While it looks similar to a diamond, it has its own unique properties—like even greater sparkle and fire.
Moissanite offers incredible sparkle, extreme durability, and ethical peace of mind—all at a fraction of the cost of diamonds. It’s a smart, beautiful, and budget-friendly gem for those who want shine and substance
Yes and no. Moissanite conducts heat similarly to diamonds, so many basic diamond testers will identify it as a diamond. However, advanced testers or moissanite-specific testers can tell the difference.
No. Unlike cubic zirconia (CZ), moissanite doesn’t become cloudy or dull over time. It retains its brilliance for life with normal cleaning.
Yes. Many high-end jewelers now offer moissanite as a premium option because of its brilliance, durability, and ethical sourcing. It’s becoming a modern luxury alternative to diamonds.
Absolutely. Just like diamond jewelry, you can insure moissanite pieces for their replacement value. Many insurers now recognize moissanite as a valuable fine gemstone.
Yes! Moissanite is one of the most popular diamond alternatives for engagement rings because it’s durable, sparkly, and budget-friendly while still luxurious.
Moissanite does not have the same resale market as diamonds, but its value lies in affordability, beauty, and longevity. Most people buy it to keep and enjoy rather than resell.
Yes. Moissanite can be set in any precious metal, just like diamonds—whether that’s 925 silver, gold, or platinum. It pairs beautifully with all metals.
Moissanite is available in all popular diamond cuts: round, princess, cushion, emerald, oval, pear, marquise, heart, radiant, and more. It can also be cut into fancy shapes for custom jewelry.
Absolutely. Being lab-created, it’s eco-friendly and conflict-free.
